What is Pigmentation?

The color of our skin is determined by melanocytes, a type of cell located in the outer layer of our skin that produces pigments known as melanin. However, when our skin cells are damaged or become unhealthy, it can lead to an overproduction of melanin, resulting in skin discoloration and hyperpigmentation, such as dark patches.
Common causes of this include direct exposure to sunlight, skin injury, inflammation, hormonal changes, and aging. |
