Overweight & Obesity
|
Overweight and obesity are major health concerns not only in Malaysia but also worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), global obesity rates have tripled since 1975, and in 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight, with over 650 million of them being obese. In Malaysia, the prevalence of obesity has also increased significantly over the past few decades.
The National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) conducted in 2019 showed that the prevalence of overweight and obesity among adults in Malaysia was 30.0% and 20.7%, respectively. This is a worrying trend, as being overweight or obese can increase the risk of developing many health problems, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and certain types of cancer. |

The fat you can pinch on your waist, arms, legs or anywhere else is all subcutaneous fat, stored just beneath the skin. |

Visceral fat is stored within the abdominal cavity found around muscle and vital internal organs such as the liver, pancreas and intestines. |

On average, consuming an excess of about 3,500 calories can result in gaining roughly 1 pound (0.45 kilograms) of body fat, but individual needs can vary widely. |
